BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- Work on the site of the December fire that destroyed Briarcliff Manor’s pool pavilion is continuing, said Village Manager Philip E. Zegarelli in his latest report.

The roof of the structure -- the heart and soul of Law Memorial Park off Pleasantville Road -- has now been completely removed, he said.

After reviewing the damage to the pavilion's kitchen and fireplace, the village decided that both ends were “basically cooked” and in need of demolition, Zegarelli said.

The village has given the go-ahead for work on the inside and outside pool deck facilities, he added.

It is also landscaping the area and has put up fencing for safety reasons, he said.

The village is pursuing grants to help it undo the damage done to the popular facility by the blaze.

In his report, Zegarelli also recapped the village’s response to a recent winter storm that left power lines and trees down around the region.

Calling it a “whopper,” the village manager said it left more than 300 homes without power.

Zegarelli said that major stuff was limited to several key areas, although many residents also reported damage to their properties.

Local fire, ambulance, and public works crews responded quickly, but were limited in their tasks overnight because downed power lines fall under the purview of Con Ed, he said.

Zegarelli said that the utility was slow in its response and that it wasn’t until the following afternoon that restoration efforts really got going.

The extent of the storm was underestimated, he said, adding that even having well-trained personnel and good equipment doesn’t help when the damage is caused by wind and rain, and not just by snow.
