OSSINING, N.Y. With crab claw appetizers, smoking acai berry cosmopolitans and live jazz, the newly renovated Atria on the Hudson senior living community in Ossining celebrated its reopening in style Tuesday night.
In the fall of 2008 residents of the senior living center were relocated when the center closed its doors to completely renovate its building at 321 North Highland Ave., which used to be a Sheraton hotel.
"This is a major, major project for the village of Ossining. It means for the village that there will be people living here, people visiting here and people working here," said Ossining Village Mayor William Hanauer, before cutting a red ribbon to celebrate Atria's reopening. "It's a very exciting thing in this terrible economy to have an opportunity for people to have a great home. It's a step forward for the entire village."
Atria on the Hudson is one of four Atria facilities in Westchester. Its multimillion-dollar renovation of the ten-acre site was done not only to bring its facility up to standard with other Atria facilities in Briarcliff, Ardsley and Port Chester, but also to make the facility environmentally sustainable.
Sustainable building practices used during renovation include reusing more than 75 percent of roof and walls from the old building, recycling building material for use in sidewalks and parking lots, using environmentally-friendly paints and fabrics and the installation of rooftop solar panels. Atria expects its facility to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified this fall.
"It's a very nice, beautiful place. The food is very good. The people that work here are nice, the residents are kind and the scenery outside is beautiful," said Shirley Pincus, who has been living at Atria on the Hudson since May along with her son-in-law's mother.
Luxury facilities that residents enjoy include a swimming pool, gym, spa, hair salon, happy hour bar, three dining areas, live music and a theater with popcorn, candy and hot dogs.
There are 122 apartments at the senior living complex, including 22 units for memory care patients and 100 independent and assisted living units.
"I think it's very family friendly. I really feel like they're taking good care of my grandmother," said Derek Escalante as he enjoyed dinner with his mother and grandmother.
His mother, Mary Kay Polacek, agreed.
"It's very professional, very friendly and the restaurants are wonderful," she said.
