The campaign, coordinated by Ossining Communities That Care, involves taking a selfie holding a piece of paper pledging to not do something destructive and illegal like allowing minors to have an unsupervised house party and posting it on the Ossining Communities That Care facebook page.
Already, people like State Senator David Carlucci and Ossining Schools Superintendent Raymond Sanchez have taken the pledge. Staff and students at Ossining High School have also taken the pledge, along with employees at Dolce Hotels and Resort.
Alice Joselow, head of Ossining Communities That Care, regularly posts on the facebook page, which is designed to help parents navigate the teenage and tween years.
"We give them articles on prevention and dealing with teen and tween angst," Joselow said.
Joselow saw a post with someone pledging not to drink and drive over the holiday season and came up with her idea, including pledging not to serve minors under 21.
The police are also giving holiday to-do lists to businesses that sell alcohol reminding them to card people and about the dangers of drunk driving.
"It's an important initiative, we're just putting a different spin on it," Joselow said.
Joselow said with so many holiday parties going on, drinking and driving can become common.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), last year 10,228 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, including 415 in the second half of December alone.
"The stereotype in holiday parties is people drinking a lot," Joselow said. "In order to keep the community safe, don't drink and drive. It's an important message."
