Ossining Fire Leaves 14 Homeless

OSSINING, N.Y. – A fire that broke out Wednesday at 82 Broadway left 14 people homeless.

Ninety-five members of the Ossining Fire Department responded to the blaze, which started at around 2:30 a.m. and took about two hours to extinguish, Ossining fire dispatcher Don Apostolico said. They were assisted by Croton, Yorktown, Briarcliff, Millwood and Sleepy Hollow fire departments.

Fire investigators believe that the fire, which broke out between the ceiling of the basement and the first floor, was caused by an electrical problem, Apostolico said. The fire in the two-story house with an attic did not affect a neighboring house.

One firefighter who was taken to the hospital to be treated for exhaustion has been released, Apostolico said.

The 14 victims of the fire are being helped by the Red Cross. They spent time in the game room of the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center on Wednesday and Thursday, community center workers said, and they are now being housed in the Marriott hotel in Tarrytown.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire, Apostolico said.
