Ossining Class Of 1971 Creates Scholarship Fund

OSSINING, N.Y. – The Ossining High School Class of 1971 has established a scholarship fund for graduating seniors applying to colleges.

Members of the Class of 1971 celebrated their 40th reunion in Ossining in September. Alumna Mary Taylor Ditson reached out to classmates through Facebook and later a separate website for donations for the Scholarship Fund.

Then, on Sept. 24, the reunion committee offered members of the Class of 1971 a rebate on the reunion dinner price because more people than expected had come to the party. Inspired by Tom Strauss, the treasurer of the reunion committee, almost everyone at the dinner party contributed their rebate to the scholarship fund.

Ultimately, the Class of 1971 raised $15,071 for their scholarship fund. Members of the class presented a check for that amount to the Board of Education on Wednesday night. Their first two awards for graduating seniors will be a $2,000 scholarship payable to the college where the student matriculates in the fall, and a laptop computer. Students must apply for the awards, and applications will be reviewed in the spring.

Because the fundraising was so successful, the Scholarship Fund Committee, chaired by Susan Knell, is planning to extend the scholarship five years, and then begin another fundraiser to coincide with the Class of 1971's 45th reunion in 2016. Anyone who would like more information about the scholarship fund should contact Rosalie Marcus at 845-628-6095 or AcmeRose2@gmail.com.
