Matthew Gullotta, a 10-year-old fifth-grader at Roosevelt School in Ossining has raised more than $2,800 for the American Heart Association's Jump For Heart fundraiser.
Gullotta has been going up and down Ossining asking for donations.
"Anyone who donates money, no matter the amount, is a heart hero," Gullotta said.
Gullota donated $36 from his piggy bank and received donations from the school secretary, his friends and his bus driver. He raised $120 at the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Sleepy Hollow.
His initial fundraising goal was only $250. Matthew's father, Matt, said the fundraiser has totally changed his son, who has reading issues and went through three operations before he as five.
"He's been talking to people and smiling at people," the elder Gullotta said. "His self esteem has increased. He's more outgoing. He's just a rock star right now."
Matt said at first his son was a little nervous about asking for people to money, but he told him to make sure to smile.
Gullotta said he is raising money simply to help kids with heart trouble.
"It's sad when you hear about kids dying," Gullotta said. "I just want to help kids. I had surgery three times and it doesn't feel good. I want the kids to feel better than I did."
Gullotta said people have been very helpful and willing to donate. One little girl gave $4, while others have donated a pennies or quarters. Gullotta has also been helped by his sister Amilia, who designed a poster for him.
Gullotta also helps out with Family Ties in Ossining, an organization that helps out families in need.
"It's great when you see your kids want to do this," Matthew's father said. "My wife and I are so proud."
