OSSINING, N.Y. – While students are off for summer vacation, the Ossining schools' maintenance and custodial crews have been hard at work preparing for the re-opening of schools in September.
"This is our busiest time of the year," said Director of Schools Facilities Ken Waldron. "A lot of planning and hard work goes into maintaining all the district's buildings and infrastructure so students have a safe, clean and comfortable place to learn, and the taxpayers' investment is protected."
Every room, every closet and every desk in the school district has been emptied and cleaned, school officials said in a press release. That amounts to 185 classrooms and more than 4,600 desks.
In addition, every floor has been stripped, cleaned, and freshly waxed, and dozens of classrooms have been painted.
Other maintenance activities include:
- Replacing the stucco on the back of the high school and re-doing landscaping
- Replacing a damaged wooden floor in the high school art room with a concrete floor
- Repairing damage to the high school freezer floor in the lower kitchen
- Installing a new waste line from the art room at the high school
- Removing the old floor in the high school athletic director's office
- Repairing the roof over the library at the Anne M. Dorner Middle School
- Repairing the roof over the A wing at the middle school
- Installing an electronic monitor to display school news in the middle school entrance
- Repairing damage to the gymnasium floor at the Claremont Elementary School
- Moving the technology department from the Claremont School to Park School
- Restoring two classrooms at Claremont, including installing smart boards, coat hooks and a new sink
- Removing damaged flooring in the cafeteria at Brookside Elementary School
- Replacing parts of the boiler at Brookside
- Patching blacktop in the driveway at Brookside
- Replacing damaged steps from the gymnasium to the playground at Brookside
- Replacing damaged flooring at the cafeteria at Park Early Childhood Center
- Installing wall covering in the cafeteria at Park School
- Repairing the roof at Park School
- Replacing broken water lines in the art room at Roosevelt Elementary School
- Replacing a drinking water fountain water line at Roosevelt
- Replacing a drinking fountain with a water cooler at Roosevelt
- Installing a 40-foot by 60-foot play area behind Roosevelt School
"The custodial and maintenance staffs deserve a lot of credit for the work they do during the summer," said Waldron. "They are committed to making Ossining a great place to learn."

To the Editor: First, I and others like me find it curious that "The Daily Ossining" has chosen today to replicate an Ossining school district press release written by the BOCES Press Office nearly in its entirety and yet you chose to run this information with your byline as if you wrote it yourself. Your competitors chose not to do the same.
Secondly, it is truly amazing that all of this work performed by Mr. Waldron's capable staff has been performed and that the school is _ready_ for students in spite of the failure of the $100,000,000 (with interest over twenty years factored in) Bond Issue last May. Now that is over 27,000 voting taxpayers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that:
"Where there is a will, there was a way"
Now, lets educate our students in the core 'back to basics' subjects that will help each and every one of them be successful in life.
