OSSINING, N.Y. -- The revitalization of the Village of Ossining was on full display at the Ossining Public Library.
Community Preservation Corporation, a non-profit that helps finance affordable housing projects, recently hosted its latest summit "Downtown Redevelopment Strategies" at the library. The summit featured local industry panelists analyzing downtown trends and Main Street redevelopment using Ossining as an example. CPC recently located its Hudson Valley offices to Ossining.
Village of Ossining Mayor Bill Hanauer, along with Ingrid Richards, manager of downtown and economic development of the village showed how Ossining has revitalized its downtown.
“The Village is in the midst of a renaissance of economic development – our present period of growth has been unmatched since the 1870s,” said Hanauer. “New housing is available at all levels of affordability and new space being prepared for new commercial establishments to cater to the needs of current and future residents.”
Richards said Ossining offers the highest return on investment in Westchester.
"We are focused on equitable community development and strive to create a sustainable foundation for retail business and a local marketplace," Richards said.
In recent years, the village has seen the development of Avalon Ossining, a luxury apartment complex and new mixed use development project at 147-155 Main St., a site that was destroyed by a fire. The village is hoping the Harbor Square mixed use waterfront project will open in spring 2016.
Officials at CPC said they have been pleased with the reception they have received since moving to the village.
“We have been overwhelmed by the warm welcoming from the village and the local community,” Doug Olcott, senior vice president and director of CPC's Hudson Valley Region said. “The conference served as an ideal gateway to continue the conversation and meet new local partners who share the commitment to downtown revitalization."
Presentations at the summit included "Downtown Redevelopment Strategies and Opportunities," "Alternative Strategies for Main Street Revitalization" and "Tourism as a Local Economic Driver."
