Green Corn, Leatherman For Weekend Around Briarcliff

OSSINING, N.Y. – Looking for ways to celebrate the impending end of summer and the Labor Day weekend? Here's a list of activities for the weekend, including nature excursions, the Green Corn Festival and a presentation on the legendary figure, the Leatherman.

Saturday

Green Corn Festival, 10 a.m. Saturday – 5 p.m. Monday

Enjoy folk tales, song, open-hearth cooking demonstrations and hands-on craft activities at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow. The event brings to life the history and culture of the area's Native American residents. Susan McLellan Plaisted will demonstrate Native American cooking and medicine making, and Arthur Kerms will demonstrate wampum making and how wooden bowls and utensils were made. Tastefully Yours of Briarcliff will provide picnic food. Admission $6 - $10.

Alien Shirts, 1 p.m.

Make a wearable field guide of weeds and invasive plants at the Cranberry Lake Preserve on Old Orchard Street in North White Plains. Activity will be led by Melissa Sullivan. Bring a plain white or light-colored t-shirt that you will imprint images on. Free.

Ponding Around, 1 p.m.

Explore ponds at the Marchlands Conservancy on Route 1 in Rye. Dip nets provided. Long pants and shoes are recommended. Free.

Watercolor in Good Company, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Watercolors exhibit at the Main House Gallery at Muscoot Farm on Route 100 in Somers. Show is organized by the Westchester Watercolor Group. Free.

Sunday

The Legend of the Leatherman, 6:30 p.m.

Presentation at the Sparta Cemetery by the Ossining Historical Society on the Leatherman, a 19th century wanderer who traveled a circuitous route between Connecticut and the Hudson River every 34 days wearing a 60-pound leather suit. Complementary parking at the Scarborough Presbyterian Church parking lot across from the Sparta Cemetery on Route 9 and Revolutionary Road, where the Leatherman is buried. Free.

Early Fall Migrants, 7:30 a.m.

Discover fall birds on the move for the season at Marshlands Conservancy on Route 1 in Rye. Bring binoculars. Long pants and shoes recommended. Free.

Walking Tour of Perennial Gardens, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Enjoy a leisurely walk through the perennial gardens with a horticulturalist at Lasdon Park, Arboretum & Veterans Memorial on Route 35 in Somers. Learn about perennials that will bring color to your fall garden. Free.

Monday

Labor Day Antiques Fair, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Antiques on the lawn at Lasdon Park on Route 35 in Somers. Admission is $7 for adults, free for children under 13.
