The fire started at around 5 p.m. in the sauna room and New Rochelle firefighters had it knocked down within 90 minutes. All children and JCC staff members were immediately and swiftly evacuated to the Golden Horseshoe Shopping Center across the street. No injuries have been reported.

It is unknown if there is any structural damage to the building. Scarsdale police assisted in traffic control, as Wilmot Road needed to be closed so a fireh ose could be dragged across the street, according to New Rochelle Lt. J. Collins Coyne.

“At this point it’s extinguished and evacuated. We have some people stuck right now because of the traffic (at the corner),” he said at 6:30 p.m. once the fire was extinguished. “At this point, it’s about ensuring that it can’t reignite. They’ll do an extensive cleaning and then begin ventilating.”
