OSSINING, N.Y. Democrat Susanne Donnelly declared victory in the Ossining Town Supervisor race with 51 percent of the vote. Her opponent, Peter Tripodi IV, however, did not concede defeat.
With 93 percent of districts reporting, Donnelly led Tripodi by 2,506 votes to 2,442 votes, according to unofficial results from the Westchester Board of Elections.
"My heart was going pitter patter," Donnelly said at the Ossining Boat House where the Democrats gathered and celebrated Tuesday night. "This was a tough, tough race but we all got through it together."
With just 64 votes separating the two candidates, however, Tripodi said the race was too close to call. District five's voting machine was locked, Tripodi said, meaning that those votes had not been counted yet.
"I am not going to concede yet I'm going to wait until the final results," Tripodi said.
Donnelly and Tripodi, both currently in political office, fought a hard race. Donnelly has been an Ossining village trustee for about five years and her term in that office is up. Tripodi has been an Ossining town councilman for two years and, if he doesn't win the Town Supervisor spot, he has two more years to go on his town board term.
Tripodi said he would like to help the Town of Ossining save money by selling, renting or using the town's police station, getting rid of overpaid part-time consultants and bringing an anchor store to North State Road, which would help generate tax money for the town.
Donnelly's ideas for helping the town save money are to expedite the sale or rental of the town's police station and to have more shared services "where appropriate."
Tripodi ran on the Republican, Conservative and Independence Party tickets for town council, while Donnelly ran on the Democratic and Working Families lines.
