Crews Work On $68,000 Repair Of Briarcliff Pool

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – The makeover of the Briarcliff Village Pool in Law Memorial Park is more than 13 years in the making.

In September 1999, Hurricane Floyd swept through Briarcliff Manor and hydrostatic pressure from underneath dislodged the pool liner. Crews replaced the liner later that year. In the last 13 years, dozens of major storms, including Hurricane Irene, have been slowly dislodging the pool again. Construction crews are working this week to replace the entire pool liner once more before winter.

“Twice last year we had major storm damage where the pool flooded and the pond ended up in the pool,” said Briarcliff Village Manager Philip Zegarelli. “We had to drain it. But what happened each time is that the seam stretched, and it accelerated the deterioration. Now is the time to do this before it gets worse.”

The Briarcliff Board of Trustees agreed Oct. 17 during a regular meeting to pass a resolution to repair the liner. The total cost is expected to be about $68,000, Zegarelli said.

“We haven’t had a major rebuild on it since Hurricane Floyd. It was near failure,” he said. “The money for the pool comes from a fund that when developers are building on properties, they pay various fees to the village for recreation. So this won’t be an additional expenditure. We anticipated needing to do this.”

Crews expect to finish work before December.

“It should take about two weeks to finish the construction,” Zegarelli said. “It’s got to be done quick because you don’t want that hydrostatic pressure making it worse. The pool is like a bottle floating in the water. There’s a lot of lift in the water. It’s not like it’s going to pop out, but you need to get the seals in as quickly as possible.”
