In many cases, this is the only food they have for the holiday. The food drive ended Sunday when CSI volunteers – helping the Social Action Committee - packed the food into cartons and, along with donations from other synagogues, and delivered it to Project Ezra in Manhattan. Project Ezra will deliver a carton of food to each needy resident in Manhattan.
This is a wonderful family volunteer opportunity and, most volunteers feel, a great opportunity to see their donations through to their final destination.
During Passover, Jews refrain from eating "chametz," which is anything that contains barley, wheat, rye, oats and spelt (a kind of wheat). No leavening is allowed.
This signifies the fact the Hebrews had no time to let their bread rise as they made a hurried escape from Egypt.
"This is part of our Social Action Committee," chairperson Judy Boehr added. "We bring a warm, personal contact to needy people who may have little contact with the outside world."
CSI volunteers bought food to add to the numerous cartons of Passover food and help even more people.
Since some items are very hard to find in Northern Westchester, donations still are appreciated if you were unable to shop or drop off anything.
