Briarcliff Students Excel In State Tests

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- Results from state standardized English and math tests showed that Briarcliff third through eighth graders performed well above the state average in both English and math tests.

For the English Language Arts (ELA) exam, 85.6 percent of Briarcliff grade 3-8 students met or exceeded the state proficiency standard, while 52.8 percent of grade 3-8 students across the state met or exceeded the standard.

For the math exam, 92.9 percent of Briarcliff grade 3-8 students met or exceeded the proficiency standard, while 63.3 percent of grade 3-8 students across the state met or exceeded the standard.

"I think these state tests are important in the sense that they let you know how children are faring with other children in the state and county that you live in. They measure up how all children are doing," said Jennifer Rosen, the newest member of the Briarcliff Board of Education, who has four children in the Briarcliff school system. "It's just one of the many things that I look at in terms of seeing how my kids are doing in school."

Neither Briarcliff Superintendent of Schools Neal Miller nor Briarcliff Assistant Superintendent of Schools Stuart Mattey were available to comment on the test results on Tuesday. Miller was away on vacation and Mattey was out of town.

Last year, the state raised its "proficiency" standard scores to "better reflect the level of achievement needed to indicate that a student is on track to achieve college-ready scores on future state exams," state education department officials said in a press release.

"While the majority of students statewide met or exceeded the state's proficiency standards in both math and English Language Arts, overall performance remains low and the gaps in achievement persist," the release said.

Countywide, 62.9 percent of grade 3-8 students met or exceeded proficiency standards for English Language Arts, and 70.1 percent met or exceeded proficiency standards for math.
