Briarcliff Student Wins Barnes & Noble Teacher Appreciation Essay Contest

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – A Briarcliff High School student and teacher recently qualified to compete nationally for the annual Barnes & Noble “My Favorite Teacher” contest.

Olivia Segal, a senior at Briarcliff High, wrote and entered an essay about French teacher Samantha Boyer. Barnes & Noble officials selected Segal’s essay as the winner among entries from 12 schools in Westchester and Putnam counties.

“I just love the teachers here so much,” Segal said in a press release.

“I had Ms. Boyer for three years, and I felt like I really learned a lot about the language and about myself. She is just such a supportive and compassionate person and an amazing teacher.”

Boyer and Segal both received special certificates, and are now entered into the national competition. The national winner will receive $5,000.

“I was extremely touched to know she would take the time out of her busy adolescent life to write this,” Boyer said in a press release. “As an educator, what more can you possibly want than to have this kind of impact on a student?”

“To put it out there for the public, I am extremely grateful and thankfu,” she added.

“She makes my choice in this career worthwhile.”
