Briarcliff Prepares For Snowstorm, Big Or Small

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. - Whether Briarcliff Manor is hit with six inches of snow or a foot, Village Manager Philip Zegarelli said "the streets will be cleaned."

Briarcliff Manor village officials said they were prepared for the winter storm expected to hit the area Friday and Saturday.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Westchester County for Friday and predicted the area could get hit with rain and more than a foot of snow before Saturday. Zegarelli met with Department of Public Works officials and members of the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department on Thursday afternoon to prepare for the storm.

"Each storm is different but most of these nor'easters come up from the south. But this one is coming from Wisconsin and Texas so we really don't know what it's going to look like," Zegarelli said. "So we're prepared from an equipment and personnel point of view, but until we get better clarification as to what it's going to be, it's going to be harder to predict."

Zegarelli said he spoke with officials of the National Weather Service who informed him that anywhere from three to 12 inches of snow should be expected.

"Is it a mammoth difference either way? It could be if it's a wet snow," he said. "We're watching it very closely and no matter what the streets will be cleaned."

With several snowstorms hitting the area this winter, Zegarelli said it is possible new storms could move the village past its budget, but it was more important to keep the village safe.

"Heavy snowstorms eat into the budget but when you have the little storms, it creates a lot of ice and takes a toll, too," he said. "I allocate money for the snow budget and we try to live within that but if it snows, we will clean the streets."
