BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Crews with Briarcliff Manor’s Department of Public Works will work through the weekend to continue efforts to help the village recover from Hurricane Sandy.
Village Manager Philip Zegarelli is asking residents to have storm debris from the hurricane and the recent nor’easter at the curb by Sunday, Nov. 25, for pickup. Residents experiencing repeat power outages are also asked to submit a second report to Consolidated Edison. Zegarelli said cable and telephone line restoration have taken longer than expected and asked that residents call their cable and telephone providers for assistance and get a reference number to share with the village for follow-up.
“We’re largely back to normal and it appears almost everyone has power once again,” Zegarelli said Friday. “The major problem is the telephone and cable lines that are still down. In the urgency of replacing damaged telephone and cable lines after Sandy, there was a shortage of longer poles, and the shorter ones created problems with the spacing. It’s a very unique situation, but the storm was very unique, too.”
Zegarelli also cautioned residents not to put volatile compounds down the sink, toilet or sewer after the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department responded to a gasoline smell coming from the sewer system.
“It appears that someone poured old gasoline down the village’s sewer system,” Zegarelli wrote in a village manager update. “I cannot tell you how dangerous this could be or how many violations this equates to. More importantly, it could create an explosive condition with potentially lethal consequences. Major water flushing of the system had to be done by the FD [Fire Department] to lessen the danger.”
Those concerned with proper disposal are asked to call the Fire Department through the police at 914-941-2130 for guidelines.
