BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. For Judy Brazong, the owner of My Sherry &more on Pleasantville Road, being behind the cash register at her own retail establishment gives her down time to do freelance work while not losing an opportunity to make money.
"I could work either from my couch or I could be making money and working," said Brazong, who lives in Irvington.
Before owning her own liquor store, Brazong worked as an advertising manager for J. Walter Thompson. She was laid off from the company in 2009 and after doing freelance advertising for a while, she decided to look for a retail establishment.
"I found this place at a good price. The location is wonderful and the rent is good," said Brazong.
My Sherry &more, located at 1245 Pleasantville Rd., used to be Briarcliff Wines & Liquors before Brazong took over the establishment in June.
"It was horrible. The place was filthy, there were guys and dogs hanging out with a big screen TV. It wasn't very friendly," said Brazong. "Things got pretty seedy in the last three years."
Brazong cleaned and renovated the store, letting in more light from the front windows and opening up a back room to serve as a wine and liquor tasting area.
"We mostly focus on whisky because no one else is doing it and there's a lot of interest in bourbons and single malts," Brazong said. "We carry more esoteric brands. We're trying to be distinguished as a place that carries brands you can't find in other places."
Specialty liquors that My Sherry &more carries include Whistlepig, a rye whisky that is poured at Stone Barns Center in Pocantico Hills, Chris Blackwell, a rum named after the founder of Island Records, and Brooklyn Republic, a relatively new vodka with a bottle that depicts the Brooklyn Bridge when you look through it.
"Brooklyn Republic has a little bit of corn grain in it that makes it sweet so you don't need to mix it with anything," Brazong said.
My Sherry &more also carries a few "talking pieces" including a $785 vintage Dom Perignon champagne from 1990 and a $142 "1942" tequila that is part of the Don Julio tequila line.
