BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. The village recreation department is ready to heat up Law Park with swimming, running and ice-cream eating races during Family Fun Night on Friday.
Races on the field next to the village pool will start at 6 p.m., and pool events will start at 7:15 p.m. Points and award ribbons will be given out throughout the night by event, and at the end of the night, the two highest-scoring families will receive plaques. The winning families will also be added to the Briarcliff Recreation Hall of Fame which has a record of families who have won since 1963.
"It's one of Briarcliff's traditional summer time events. It's a competition yet we try to keep it very much based on fun," said Henry Jamin, the superintendent of the recreation department. "It's really just a community-based, fun event to get together and have a good time with your neighbors."
Field events include 20-yard dashes for age-based groups of boys and girls, 30-yard dashes, 40-yard dashes, a mom and dad three-legged race, ice-cream eating contests, sack relay races and a diaper derby for babies 18-months and younger.
Pool events include 25-yard any stroke races, half-pool-width any stroke races, a mom and dad any style relay and a family penny dive.
No registration is required to participate in events. Just show up!
The rain date for the event is July 15.
