Audition Time for County's Young Jazz Musicians

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Jazz Elite, a music program for young advanced-level musicians from across Westchester and beyond, will hold auditions Sunday for its 2011-2012 season.

Fall rehearsals begin on Oct. 16, according to Jazz Elite’s website.

“Jazz Elite helps youngsters develop their aural, sight-reading, improvisational, big band, and small ensemble instrument playing skills,” said Iantheia Calhoun, Jazz Elite’s artistic director.

Calhoun also stated that, as part of the annual tuition program, students attend sectional rehearsals with Jazz Elite’s college mentors, as well as jazz clinics throughout the year with famous musicians. Private lessons are also available.

Calhoun mentioned some of the artists who have taught in the program, including “jazz legends Jon Faddis, Terrell Stafford, Kenny Lee and Reginald Thomas, hard bop jazz trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater and saxophonist Tia Fuller, who plays in R&B singer Beyonce's all-female band.”

Students perform in various competitions during the year.

The auditions will take place Sunday at the Theodore D. Young Community Center on 32 Manhattan Ave., Greenburgh, from noon to 4 p.m.

Those interested in auditioning need to register in advance at www.jazzelite.org.
