Aqueduct Full of Sun, Fun and Shade in Dobbs Ferry

Dobbs Ferry residents who are fans of the Old Croton Aqueduct have much to look forward to this summer. The Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct, Inc. are hosting various walks and tours in the next few months.

The Aqueduct has already played host to two tours this summer, the Ossining Weir Tour, which took place on May 14, and the Old Croton Aqueduct in Sleepy Hollow/Rockefeller State Park tour on May 21. The next event is a hike for participants to see even more of the beautiful views of the Hudson River. The Old Croton Aqueduct in Yonkers to Untermyer Park tour will take place Saturday, May 28. Anyone who wants to hike the trail for the scenic views can meet at the top of the driveway of the Hudson River Museum at 10 a.m. There will also be a detour to Untermyer Park to learn the history of the land.

Each tour starts at different points along the Aqueduct in various towns. Further information about where to find a tour near you can be found on the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct, Inc. Facebook page. This summer there will be tours Saturday June 11, Saturday June 18, Sunday July 17, Saturday Sep. 17, Saturday Oct. 15 and Sunday Oct. 16.

The Old Croton Aqueduct was built in the 1830s as part of a plan to supply water to New York City, running all the way from the Croton River on south. The Aqueduct was originally built to last for centuries, but due to skyrocketing population growth in New York City the New Croton Aqueduct was built to supply additional water. The Old Croton Aqueduct continued to supply water until 1965 and eventually was purchased by the New York State Office of Parks to make it a landmark and attraction for Westchester. Over the years more sections of the Aqueduct was opened and in 1992 it was granted National Landmark status.
