17,000 Remain Without Power in Rivertowns Area

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- More than 17,000 customers in the Rivertowns area were without power on Sunday afternoon after a sudden snowstorm dumped several inches of heavy snow, Con Edison reported.

Numerous roads were also closed because of fallen trees, limbs and wires. Officials throughout the area were advising residents to stay off the roads and call local police to report downed trees and wires.

"This has been an unprecedented storm in many ways, with heavy snow starting much earlier than expected and a very significant accumulation," Ardsley Mayor Jay Leon said in an email to the village. "Add to this that the leaves still on trees increase the weight of the snow and we are dealing with more branches and live wires throughout the region."

Con Edison estimated that 2,652 customers had no power in Ossining, 2,349 in Briarcliff Manor, 390 in Pleasantville, 1,934 in Thornwood, 25 in Hawthorne, 1,029 in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, 1,565 in Valhalla, 2,059 in Irvington, 2,203 in Greenburgh and Ardsley and 2,809 in Hastings.

Con Edison estimates that all power should be restored in the Rivertowns area by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.

"I would like to personally ask all Village residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary," Irvington Mayor Brian Smith said in a notification from the village. "Take advantage of this unique event to spend time at home with your families or go for a walk in our 'Autumn Wonderland.'"

The Town of Greenburgh designated the Theodore Young Community Center at 32 Manhattan Ave. as a warming center, Police Chief Joseph DeCarlo said.
