12 Teaching Assistants To Be Hired In Briarcliff

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Twelve teaching assistants are expected to be hired by the start of the school year, schools Superintendent Neal Miller said at a Board of Education meeting on Tuesday night.

The teaching assistants were written into 12 Individualized Education Programs, Miller said. An IEP is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Act to provide education tailored to a special education student's needs.

"We're going to be hiring certified teachers for this position," Miller said. "We have hundreds of resumes and I believe by September we will fill the positions."

A resolution to create the 12 teaching assistant positions was approved by members of the Briarcliff Board of Education on Tuesday night.

Ten of the teaching assistants will work at Todd Elementary school, one will work in at Briarcliff Middle School, and one will work at Briarcliff High School.

The cost of having teaching assistants will be comparable to having teacher aides, Miller said.

To help compensate for the cost of hiring teaching assistants, six teacher aide positions will be eliminated from the district.

"I couldn't feel worse about people having to lose their positions, but we do feel that teaching assistants are a stronger way of educating our students," Miller said.

Teaching assistants can instruct students and do other things that teacher aides are not allowed to do, Miller explained.

In addition to the 12 teaching assistants, nine part-time school lunch monitors are also expected to be hired to provide supervision during lunch periods at the Todd School and the Briarcliff Middle School.
