The centenarian was born in Brooklyn but spent most of her life in Buffalo. She moved to Atria three years ago with her boyfriend, Sam, who recently turned 105.

At Atria, Solomons is known for her skill at games like mahjongg and canasta and is an active member of the community.

"Thank you for coming and helping me celebrate," Solomons said. "I've been waiting for this day for 100 years. I hope to celebrate 100 more."

Solomons said a good family and an optimistic outlook, even in bad times, has helped her live such a long life. Solomons has two children, three grandchildren and two great-greandchildren.

For her birthday, Solomon's daughter, Gail Ruhlman, said she planned on taking her mother out to Kittle House in Chappaqua.

"She's a role model for me in so many ways," Ruhlman said. "I have a lot of respect for her. It's been great to have her in my life."

Ruhlman said her mother's positive attitude, even in the face of several tragedies, has helped keep the family going.
