Junior League Spelling Bee Attracts Briarcliff Students

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Local third, fourth and fifth-graders are practicing how to spell V-I-C-T-O-R-Y in preparation for the first Junior League of Westchester-on-Hudson Spelling Bee on Thursday.

“We believe in the importance of reading and writing, and we feel this event will be successful” and will continue for the next few years, Pamela Minyard, the league's community vice president, said.

Students from the Tarrytown, Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Briarcliff Manor and Ossining school districts will compete in teams of five on Thursday, with the top three teams receiving “very nice” prizes, Minyard said. Minyard said the league had 30 registered students competing this year.

The bee will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Warner Library in Tarrytown. Community members are welcome to watch and root for their favorite teams.

Spellers will compete against each other, Minyard said, but each grade will be assigned grade-appropriate words. Minyard said the league wouldn't just be giving out easy words to spellers.

“It's an array of easy to very challenging words,” Minyard said.

The Junior League decided to put on a spelling bee because they focus on several issues, including literacy, Minyard said, adding that reading and reading out loud are very important issues.
