Esperito, Briarcliff Manor Veteran, Dies at 95

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. - Victor J. Esperito of Briarcliff Manor died Jan. 27. He was 95. 

A World War II veteran, he was retired from General Motors in North Tarrytown, now called Sleepy Hollow.

He was born in Ossining on March 6, 1916 to Leon and Madeline Del Penna Esperito. He graduated from Ossining High School where he lettered in four sports and caddied at the former Briarcliff Lodge.

Esperito served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, attaining the rank of wire corporal in the 899th Field Artillery Battalion. In 1941, he married Gertrude Drucker in Ossining.

A member of United Auto Workers Local 664, Esperito worked as foreman for General Motors for more than 40 years. Following his retirement, he then worked part-time as a horticulturist. 

Esperito held memberships to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Elks Lodge Post 1486 He was also past president of the former Westchester Bridge Sporting Club. His hobbies included gardening and golf.

He is survived by his brother Anthony (Gilda) Esperito and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Gertrude in 1993, his brothers Joseph, Leon, Morris and Orlando Esperito and his sisters Susan Trathen and Mae Rudenstine.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at Hawthorne Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Ann's Church in Ossining followed by interment at St. Augustine Cemetery.
