David Caputo worked in the village's Department of Public Works for 18 years before dying on Feb. 9, according to a gofundme page set up for his family. He was 52.

"David was a proud member of the Village of Ossining Community," says the page, later adding, "He leaves behind his wife, 6-year-old son and three step children."

By early Wednesday, 70 people had contributed to the Caputo family, which was said to be facing a significant financial burden.

Donations -- some as low as $15 and others as high as $300 -- totaled $7,550 on Wednesday. Organizers are hoping to collect $25,000.

In a post Tuesday on the fundraising page, Dawn Caputo, David Caputo's sister, expressed gratitude for those who have stepped in to help.

"Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to The Caputo Fund," she said. "The family appreciates the support and assistance at this time.
