BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. The April showers that have continued into May didnt stop the kick-off for Briarcliff Manors First Thursday Night Lights.
Residents and restaurant owners welcomed the return of the monthly warm weather event that features local vendors, music and specials on Pleasantville Road. The event, organized through the Briarcliff Manor Chamber of Commerce, was inspired by similar events in Tarrytown. Organizers said the idea is to bring Briarciff Manor residents and business owners closer together and invite them outside.
Thursday nights event, titled Spring Fling highlighted specials from more than a dozen restaurants and vendors and had music from Westchesters WFAS 103.9 FM. Several residents and restaurant owners said they are hoping the event will repeat the success of last year.
Resident Theresa Iannarelli said the rain likely contributed to the light turnout Thursday.
I had heard about how great this was last year and this was the first time I was free, Iannarelli said. I think its a great idea and its a wonderful excuse to get out and I hope it succeeds.
Vincent Janniello, owner of Janniellos Specialty Foods on Pleasantville Road, said the store participated in First Thursday Night Lights last year and enjoyed an increase in sales.
Usually after 6:30 p.m. the town just shuts down except for a few restaurants. Its nice to get a little more action in town, Janniello said. There are usually more people and we definitely do well with this event during the summer and we see a nice increase in traffic flow so were hoping for that again.
Eric Messer, president of Briarcliff Manors Chamber of Commerce, said hes also hoping to repeat the success of the event from last year.
This year we got the majority of businesses in town to participate all offering something special, Messer said. But its nice to do something to bring the community out and its nice to see your neighbors and it really makes a community. I think its a great idea and we want to keep it around.
