Briarcliff Teen Organizes Large Library Book Sale

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Briarcliff Manor freshman Caroline Pennacchio was hoping to get a few books to donate to the local library. She got more than 5,000.

After finding out the Briarcliff Manor Public Library couldn’t take that many books, the 14-year-old Girl Scout decided to help the library in a slightly different way. Pennacchio and dozens of volunteers are hoping to raise money for the library through a weekend book sale starting at noon Friday and running through 4 p.m. Sunday.

“I’ve loved to read since I was little and I decided to collect books to expand the collection because no library can keep up with our demand,” Pennacchio said. “When I found out they couldn’t use all of these I told them I still wanted to help them get the things they did need. I really love the library and I think it’s great to see the community come together like this.”

Library Director Melinda Greenblatt said the book sale could be the largest in Briarcliff Manor’s history.

“We haven’t done this for many years because it’s so much work for a library staff to put one together,” Greenblatt said. “This is the first year in a long time that we’ve done this and I believe there are many more books than we’ve had in the past.”

Greenblatt said the proceeds from the weekend sale are set to go toward new materials at the library.

“Libraries have very limited budgets and books keep getting more and more expensive and we have to now buy things like e-books and audiobooks and DVDs,” she said. “Our budget just cannot stretch out to do all of those things that we’ve wanted. So with this sale I’m hoping that we’re going to make several thousand dollars. But this sale means that we’re going to buy things that we know the community really wants.”
