Briarcliff Residents Collect Supplies For Hurricane Sandy Victims

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Briarcliff Manor resident Christina Deems and her husband knew many people in the New York metropolitan area who had their lives upended after Hurricane Sandy. They decided they needed to help.

“Around here, people were inconvenienced,” Deems said. “But people down there — their lives were changed. My husband does work down there and he's been seeing firsthand how bad it is.”

Deems partnered with Club Fit to host a Hurricane Sandy relief drive Saturday morning, soliciting donations from residents in the area.

Deems said she coordinated with Club Fit as a drop-off point because they had been great in helping area families without power by offering free hot showers and places to charge electronics.

Deems and her husband planned to pick up additional supplies from the Salvation Army before heading to a church in Red Hook, Brooklyn that was serving as a distribution point. The donation drop-off garnered an “amazing” number of supplies for those in need, Deems said.

“It's been just great,” she said. “Everyone's coming together and bringing an overwhelming amount of supplies.”
