Briarcliff Manor Maps Show 200-Year History

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – It's a blast from the past as the Briarcliff Manor Scarborough Historical Society gives residents a chance to see what Briarcliff Manor looked like more than 200 years ago.

The historical society is showcasing maps, drawings and illustrative materials of early Briarcliff Manor , Westchester and surrounding areas that date to 1806 in an exhibit that includes archival items that relate to early life in the community and surroundings.

The exhibit is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through June 30 at the historical society, located below the Briarcliff Manor Public Library . President-elect Karen Smith said the exhibit offers residents a chance “to see where Briarcliff Manor came from.”

“You can learn a lot from looking at the maps, and you can actually see how this area changed over time,” Smith said. “It’s very, very interesting to see on the map from 1890 that there are larger sections of the village than they were in say, 1911.”

Residents with a keen eye can learn a great deal from many landmarks around the area, she said. For example, All Saints Episcopal Church can be seen on several maps dating back more than 150 years. Residents will also notice the name Briarcliff Manor doesn’t appear on most of the maps.

“The name Briar Cliff is on many of the early maps, and I think it’s because it took a while for the name to really settle in,” Smith said. “It used to be two words, and for a little bit it was Briarcliffe. So there’s a lot you can learn about all of our history by seeing these maps and drawings. We think people will love them.”

The exhibit is also open by appointment by calling 914-941-4393. Those interesting in loaning a map to the historical society for the exhibit are asked to call George Behling at 914-417-7041.
