Briarcliff Brownies Help Beautify Businesses

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – For 7-year-old Michela Deem, being a member of Briarcliff Manor’s Brownie Troop 2315 is about a lot more than just having fun.

“My favorite thing is that we mostly do things to help people and show them what we can do to help the environment around us,” Michela said. “But it’s also really fun.”

Michela and a dozen other second-grade girls helped plant daffodils Monday afternoon in front of Briarcliff Manor’s Thompson & Bender, a public relations firm on Pleasantville Road. The girls will have to wait until the spring to see the daffodils bloom, but the community project also allowed them to earn badges on the road to becoming Girl Scouts.  Co-leader Lynn Watson said the location on the corner of Pleasantville Road and North State Road will also help bring attention to all of the girls’ community projects.

“We wanted to plant daffodils to beautify the community and teach the girls some gardening skills,” Watson said. “We looked around the community and thought this would be a great site because it’s so central with the stop light on Main Street.”

Watson added that the troop will be involved in several other community projects in the next few months, including Meals On Wheels and performing Christmas Carols at Atria Briarcliff Manor.

“We are going to do a lot of projects that will help the girls become more involved in their community,” she said. “The folks (at Thompson & Bender) were not only enthusiastic about us doing this, but they also gave us a $200 grant toward the project, which was wonderful. We’ve been looking forward to this since August and this has been terrific.”

As a former Brownie and Girl Scout, Thompson & Bender partner Liz Bracket-Thompson said she was delighted to help out with the project.

“I myself was a Brownie and a Girl Scout and I know how important they are for the whole community,” she said. “I was thrilled to be able to do this for them and have the folks of Briarcliff Manor see the great work that the Brownies are doing.”
