Briarcliff Area Churches Come Together for Easter

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Good Friday is one of the busiest days for area churches but when St. Mary’s Rev. Sandra Seaborn found out that a Briarcliff Manor resident had no one to accompany her to church she took the time to help.

Briarcliff senior citizen Ruth Bergman often attends services at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Scarborough. But St. Mary’s only held one service on Good Friday in the evening and Bergman was too nervous to travel to church at night. After hearing that, Seaborn said she knew exactly what she needed to do. Seaborn accompanied Bergman to Ossining’s Trinity Episcopal Church Good Friday daytime service.

“Most of my parishioners will come to our evening service but we have a few elderly parishioners who don’t like to venture out at night,” Seaborn said. “It’s a wonderful thing that the churches are so close and that we can all support each other.”

Bergman said she was amazed that a reverend would take time on such a busy day to help her.

“I think it’s just wonderful and so thoughtful that she would do a thing like this for me,” Bergman said. “I talked to my niece in California who told me that I had to tell her that she’s just too wonderful for doing this for me.”

All four Episcopal churches in Ossining and Briarcliff Manor are carrying that spirit of helping out their neighbors by coming together for Easter weekend services.

Ossining’s Trinity Episcopal Church, Briarcliff Manor’s All Saints’ Episcopal Church and Scarborough’s St. Mary’s are joining with Ossining’s St. Paul’s on-the-Hill Episcopal Church for Saturday’s Easter Evening Liturgy.

But it’s not the only time the churches have come together, Seaborn said.

“The four churches do it about four times a year,” she said, noting that the last joint service was held on Christmas Day at All Saints’. “It’s very fun but it’s also encouraging and very supportive. And not just for us but also our congregations.”

The Holy Saturday services begin at 7:30 p.m. at St Paul’s on-the-Hill , 40 Ganung Drive, Ossining. On Easter Sunday, there are 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services at All Saints’ and a 9:30 a.m. Easter Festival and an Easter egg hunt following services at St. Paul’s. There is also a 10 a.m. Resurrection Festival Celebration at St. Mary’s and 11:15 a.m. services and Easter egg hunt at Trinity.
