Vive La France: Westchester Celebrates Bastille Day With Food, Wine

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Fourth of July may be behind us but there's still time to pay homage to red, white and blue ... the French way, at least.

Bastille Day, on Tuesday, July 14, commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, marking the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the modern republic (and France's independence). In Westchester, it means special events highlighting the country's delicious food and wine. 

A sampling follows.

Wine Geeks, Armonk: Learn about French wines (eight of them!) in the Wines For Bastille event Tuesday, July 14 at 7 p.m. Cheese and charcuterie will be served along with the tastings. Reservations necessary. The event costs $35. Vive la France: 559 Main St., (914) 273-9463.

New Rochelle City Hall: This annual event, a raising of the flag and singing of Marseillaise, features a speech about the meaning of Bastille Day. It takes place at 10 a.m. in front of City Hall with an introduction by Mayor Bramson and Sister City Initiative Member, Sheila Sarker. Professor Michael J. Hughes, Associate Professor of History, Iona College, will give a brief presentation titled  "France: The Indispensable Ally in the Struggle for American Independence."  New Rochelle’s City Manager, Charles A. Alvin & Friends, New Rochelle: Dig into a special three-course prix fixe meal designed with Paris, where Owner Alvin Clayton lived for many years, in mind. Priced at $45 per person, the menu includes a complimentary glass of red or white wine, tax and gratuity and features such French favorites as Provençal breast of chicken with ratatouille and parsnip purée. Auray, Larchmont: In a town known for its French residents, expect some Francophile fun with special nutella crepes at a discounted price at Auray Gourmet, along with sugar and butter crepes from noon to 5 p.m. There will also be outdoor grilling of classic French sausages from noon to 6 p.m. Vive la France: 144 Larchmont Ave.,(914) 833-2274.

Le Jardin Du Roi, Chappaqua: Enjoy a five course wine tasting dinner at $75 per person served in honor of the holiday. Reservations necessary. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. Vive la France: 95 King St., (914) 238-1368.
