The Ossining Rotary Club will be hosting its second annual golf outing and dinner on Sept. 18. The golf event will be held at Hudson Hills Golf Course on Route 134 and the golf event will conclude with a buffet dinner at the Atria on Hudson at 321 N. Highland Avenue in Ossining at 6:30 p.m.

John Crawford, president of the Ossining Rotary Club, said the fundraiser allows the club to continue to contribute to the community.

"We're looking to have more participants," Crawford said. "We're short on golfers."

The rotary club assists numerous organizations in Ossining, including the Baker-Collyer Cheer Fund, Ossining Matters and Open Door in Ossining. The rotary donates five scholarships to graduating Ossining High School students and has a club at the high school.

"Rotary's international focus is on polio, but our focus is on more local," Crawford said.

Crawford has been a rotarian for 30 years and is in his second go-around as president. Crawford, a funeral director, has always been active in the Ossining community, serving as fire chief and working with the library.

"I enjoy helping people," Crawford said. "We do a lot of activities in rotary. As a lifelong Ossining resident, I  wanted to contribute to the community."

As a funeral director, Crawford said he is used to working with people at their most difficult times.

"I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping people in need," Crawford said.

During his time on the rotary, Crawford has seen membership decrease.

"People's time is in demand," Crawford said. "There are a lot of organizations there. We've had members retire or move and we haven't been able to replace them. It's hard for people to keep up. A lot of people commute."

Crawford said he is hoping to have a membership drive soon and hope golfers will want to come out Thursday and enjoy the weather.

"It's going to be a fun day," Crawford said. "We're hoping to meet our goal to continue helping organizations."
