The ceremony was held at Engel Park in Ossining and featured elected officials, police, fire and emergency personnel. Ariel Louis Jacobs and Krishna Moorthy of Briarcliff Manor and Gary Robert Haag and Arthur Joseph Jones III of Ossining lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks.
"They are still with us in our hearts," Ossining Town Supervisor Sue Donnelly said. "The terrorists were determined to control. They did not take over our spirit. The determination of the American people will go on forever."
Donnelly thanked the Westchester County Police, Briarcliff Police, Ossining Police, Ossining Fire Department, Briarcliff Fire and Ambulance ad the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
"They protect the residents and property in this great town," Donnelly said.
Ossining Mayor Bill Hanauer said the terrorists used those planes as a misguided missile to destroy the security of the nation and the world.
"We mourn on Sept. 11 every year," Hanauer said. "To mourn is an expression of that sorrow that will forever make the day sacred."
Hanauer said we owe police, fire and first responders a generous deb of gratitude that will never be satisfied.
"Let us pray for an end to hatred and its causes," Hanauer said.
Briarcliff Village Manager Phil Zegarelli said we must always remember what happened on Sept. 11.
"I am never worried America cannot defend itself and win a battle," Zegarelli said. "The issue is how we win the peace. What happened 13 years ago was our Pearl Harbor. It was our wake-up call."
