Retired Trumbull police officer Michael Gonzalez, 40, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault, second-degree unlawful restraint and second-degree stalking dating back to an incident earlier this year.

The investigation into Gonzalez began in September last year following a request by the Bridgeport Superior Court State's Attorney Office regarding a possible sexual assault involving Gonzalez in Stamford, state police said.

The reported sexual assault occurred in August of 2017. At the time, Gonzalez was employed as a police officer at the Trumbull Police Department.

Gonzalez’s guilty plea comes under the Alford doctrine, which is a guilty plea in criminal court, whereby one in a criminal case does not admit to the criminal act and asserts innocence.

During the investigation, it was determined that on two different occasions in March and April 2017, Gonzalez illegally used the Trumbull Police Department’s National Crime Index computer to search for addresses and vehicles listed to the victims of the sexual assaults, state police said.

Although the statute of limitations had expired for charges of sexual assault, an arrest warrant was applied for Gonzalez for the two counts of computer crimes. Gonzalez voluntarily surrendered when the warrant was approved.

When he is sentenced on Thursday, Nov. 7, Gonzalez will face up to three years of probation.
