Marie was 30 pounds underweight and was so neglected and dehydrated, she could barely walk.
"She could only walk a few steps and then would have to lie down," Lisa Bonanno of the SPCA said.
Despite her condition, the staff at the SPCA said Marie was a gentle, happy dog.
"Since the day she arrived at the shelter, her tail hasn't stopped wagging," Bonanno said. "After months of special care and attention, she is now thriving and is the perfect example of how resilient rescue animals can be."
Marie was fed small meals and was put on IVs and various medication to get properly nourished.
"It was really cool to see her get more confidence," Bonanno said. "You could tell she had never been played with, walked or given toys."
Marie will be leading the SPCA of Westchester's Dog Walk and Pet Fair May 2 at FDR State Park. The fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is the SPCA's largest fundraising event of the year and Westchester's largest pet event.
Since her stay at the SPCA, Marie has flourished and is now living with a family in Yorktown.
"She's doing fabulous," Bonanno said. "It's so rewarding. It's hard to explain, but it makes all the time totally worth it."
Bonanno said it is a great day for families and the perfect way to showcase dogs for adoption.
"People realize that the shelter is not a scary place," Bonanno said. "The dogs look like regular family dogs.
The SPCA rescues and rehabilitates close to 2,000 homeless animals a year and is hoping to raise $100,000 from the event.
