Street robbery, gunshots return Englewood police to troublesome neighborhood

ONLY ON CVP: An Englewood house that authorities said was recently home to a gambling den was the site of more trouble before dawn yesterday when two teens who’d just left a party there were robbed by a gunman who fled into the night, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

At least one shot was fired around the same time in the same neighborhood, but the gunman vanished, as well, police said.

It began just after midnight yesterday with the holdup of a 15-year-old boy and 19-year-old man on Jane Street, a few blocks from the Central Avenue party they’d just left.

The location has become a sore spot for the city.

Officers went there Friday night on a call of a disturbance and drug use.

In September 2012, they raid the place, turning up $18,000 in cash and arresting Vaughn Sims on charges of running an illegal gambling operation there.

Detectives at the time said they believed much of the money being gambled were drug-dealing and burglary proceeds.

Sims, now 42, was one of 18 people charged as part of a massive anti-crime crackdown that fall and late summer. They included a woman who police said sold Molly from an ice cream concession stand near the town pool and a man who they said shot at an occupied car (SEE: Suspects in Englewood crackdown sold drugs near police station, in town park, elsewhere, chief says).

While investigating the Jane Street robbery early yesterday, an officer heard a gunshot — then police got a 911 call of shots fired in the same area, Torell said.

The victims described their assaulant as a black man in his late teens to early 20s. He took their cellphones and other personal items, they said.

“The activity that occurred in and around the Central Avenue & Jane Street areas there Friday night into Saturday morning now has our undivided attention. We will not allow what went on in that area in 2012 to take hold again.”
