MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- On a walk through town, Leonnardo Lopane stopped with his granddaughter Michelle in front of Nicky's Pizzeria, which, incidentally, was the first stop on the StoryWalk, a program honoring the Town of Mamaroneck's 350th Anniversary.
A page from the book "Sarah Morton's Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girl" displayed in Nicky's window-space was one of 32 posted in 22 businesses on Chatsworth and Palmer Avenue that caught Lopane's attention.
"The child that's profiled in the book would have been a child when the Town of Mamaroneck was founded," said Wendy Raso, Friends of the Larchmont Library board member, who helped put the program together. "Kids can read what it would have been like to be a kid 350 years ago."
The author, Kate Waters, profiled a girl at the Plymouth Plantation, a living history museum, and wrote the book as if she lived during her character's time period.
From Sept. 10 to Sept. 24, families will be able to pick up a map of all the locations where they would find pages from the book at the Library Children's Room.
"Even kids who might not think they're good readers, or like to read, enjoy story walk because it's also a little bit of a treasure map to follow, too," Raso said. "It adds a little excitement to it."
Lopane wasn't the only grandparent admiring the historical fiction on display. "I think it's wonderful," said Sandra Hanan, a former high school teacher in New Jersey who planned on taking her grandchildren Lucas, 1, Aubrey, 6, and Cole Flemming, 8, for a StoryWalk.
"The more you give the kids to read, the better," Lopane said. "They need to know their history."
This is the fourth StoryWalk, which is based on the StoryWalk Project by Anne Ferguson and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellog Hubbard Library. The first three involved picture books.
"It's not a typical story walk because it's not so much a children's literature book, it's more of an informational book," Raso said.
The first three StoryWalks were held in the Village of Larchmont along Boston Post Road. This one was moved to the Town of Mamaroneck along Palmer Avenue for the Town's 350th anniversary.
