YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Thousands are expected to come out to FDR Park in Yorktown Heights Saturday for the SPCA's 12th Annual Dog Walk and Pet Fair.

The annual event sees dogs and their owners walking through the park with the goal of raising $120,000 for the organization, which is based in Briarcliff. There will also be almost 80 vendors on hand. Sen. Terrence Murphy (R-Yorktown) will be cutting the official ribbon to start the walk, which will take place rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The walkathon will feature agility dogs, dogs playing frisbee, and a dancing dog. There will also be food and refreshments and WHUD will be on hand.

"It's always a lot of fun," Lisa Bonanno, director of events and communications for the SPCA, said. "There's plenty to see and do. You see dogs of every breed here. People love coming to see the different dogs. This is a very uplifting event. It's like a reunion for us since we a lot of animals we used to shelter."

The SPCA, a no-kill shelter, takes in hundreds of dogs and cats each year, including rescuing dogs from high-kill shelters. The SPCA also has its own humane law enforcement which investigates and arrests people for animal cruelty.

Peanut is the SPCA's Walkathon Chairdog. He was rescued with seven other dogs in Mount Vernon after being confined in a basement, covered in filth, emaciated and dehydrated. His owner was charged with cruelty and neglect. His condition has dramatically improved since he went to the SPCA.

"You would never recognize it as the same dog," Bonanno said. "He still needs a home. He's such a nice dog."
