County Leaders Gather In White Plains To Honor ArtsWestchester

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. --ArtsWestchester board members and representatives of cultural organizations gathered together with County Executive Rob Astorino and members of the Westchester County Board of Legislators to celebrate the long term partnership between government and the arts.

The event took place Monday at BLT restaurant in White Plains. In attendance: Deputy County Executive Kevin Plunkett, Board of Legislators Chair Michael Kaplowitz and Legislators Benjamin Boynkin, David Gelfarb, Alfreda Williams, Lyndon Williams, Michael Smith, Mary Jane Shimsky, Catherine Borgia and former legislator Martin Rogowsky, now an ArtsWestchester board member.

The evening is sponsored annually by the Pleasantville-based Jacob Burns Foundation. Barry Shenkman, the foundation's president was also in attendance. 

Froma Benerofe, ArtsWestcheter President, thanked the county for recognizing the value of the arts both in human terms and economic terms. Studies report that the arts have an $156 million economic impact in Westchester and account for 4,800 jobs.

ArtsWestchester is a major funder of cultural organizations and activities in the county and is celebrating its 50th anniversary year with a new festival called ARTSEE. Go here for details.
