Norwalk Twins Charged in Robbery of Teen

NORWALK, Conn. – A recent robbery victim knew he was seeing double while his cellphone was being taken from him: Norwalk police say two twin brothers committed the crime.

The 16-year-old victim picked out Trevon Coleman, 18, of 65 Dry Hill Road, from a mug book after the Oct. 19 incident, according to the affidavit written by Detective Ryan Everts. Trevon's brother, Tyler Coleman, also 18 and also of 65 Dry Hill Road, confessed. He said Trevon had nothing to do with it but both were arrested Saturday on a warrant and face identical charges.

Norwalk police gave the following account:

The victim said he had been looking down at his iPhone and texting while walking on Broad Street at Main Avenue at about 7 p.m. that Wednesday, when he was punched in the back of the head. He turned around and was punched under the left eye by one of three men – two of whom he thought to be twins. He tried to hold on as his phone was taken from him, but one of the men yelled, "Don't touch my brother!" The third man was just standing there. When they got his phone, they ran past the train tracks to the cemetery.

The teen wasn't sure that Trevon was one of the assailants when he found his photo in the mug book, but was more confident that it was him than he was not. Police spoke to Trevon first. He said he knew the victim from high school but that he and his brother were playing video games at another brother's house on the night in question. When pressed, he said, "That's my story, and I'm sticking to it."

Tyler gave the same story but then confessed. He said he knew the victim and had seen him texting. He hit the victim because the victim tried to grab him. Tyler said Trevon didn't do anything and neither did the third person.

Police charged the twins with second-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny, second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery and sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny. Court set bond was $30,000. Their next court date is Dec. 5.

The victim had been walking to a friend's house on Silvermine Avenue when he was attacked at the 7-11 at 247 Main Ave. His iPhone 4GS was worth $400, his father said. Trevon said he did not think he could get it back.
