"Fourteenth Colony" is Altabef's first book in what he hopes will be a series of political thrillers set in and around Westchester County. The story opens 30 years into America's future when the country is extremely divided by wealth, Altabef said, with the futuristic time frame allowing him to satirize and comment on deep social issues in a thriller involving murder, intrigue and hometown locations. Altabef is set to appear on July 14 at Tarrytown's Farmers Market in Patriot Park for a book signing fund-raiser.
"It's an intense page turner and the activity takes place all around Westchester and I think people from around here will get a kick out of reading about their hometowns and places they're familiar with in the story," he said. "It means a lot to me to do this signing here because I've lived in Sleepy Hollow and Briarcliff Manor and Chappaqua."
While "Fourteenth Colony" marks Altabef's first published book, he's hoping to write more after being inspired in 2009 by his daughter Emily who was reading the Harry Potter series.
"She had always been a really big Harry Potter fan and we would always go to these book signings and she would tell me about these things," he said. "I had time on my hands for the first time ever and I thought it would be really great to write a story with Emily about a coming-of-age story and ever since she inspired me to do that, I've been hooked on writing."
Altabef is donating 50 percent of his proceeds to Covenant House for any books sold by April, 2014. Covenant House assists homeless youth throughout the country. For more about the book visit the book's website at Tate Publishing.
