Authorities have said the scam has targeted more than 366,000 victims for more than $15.5 million, including one man who was taken for $500,000, the Consumerist reported.

Scammers will call potential victims stating they are from the IRS and will demand payment for taxes owed. They will threaten residents with arrest, deportation and loss of their driver's license if payment is not made, the Consumerist said.

The IRS is reminding residents that tax authorities will not initiate contact by phone. All correspondence regarding payments owed begins via mail, the Consumerist said.
